The Executive Council of Niger State, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, has approved a landmark initiative aimed at revolutionizing digital connectivity within the state. In a historic move, the Executive Council has approved the award of a groundbreaking zero naira per linear metre Right of Way (RoW) charge on a private fibre optic company.
This decision comes as part of the government’s commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure and fostering an enabling environment for private sector investment. In exchange for this unprecedented RoW charge exemption, the private fibre optic company has committed to deploying a 40-kilometer fibre metro ring across the state. Additionally, the company will provide public Wi-Fi services, Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) connectivity, fixed telephony, and internet access at all state-owned tertiary institutions within the metro ring.
It is worth noting that the standard RoW charge in Niger State remains at 145 naira per linear metre, as stipulated in the 2022 gazette of the consolidated revenue administration law. However, recognizing the pivotal role of digital connectivity in driving economic growth and development, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and his esteemed cabinet members have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to facilitating a conducive business environment.
The Commissioner for Communications Technology and Digital Economy reiterated the government’s dedication to prioritizing initiatives that prioritize the welfare and interests of the people. Emphasizing the significance of public-private partnerships in advancing digital infrastructure, he affirmed the state’s readiness to provide necessary waivers and support to initiatives that do not rely on state resources for financing.
Furthermore, Niger State is proud to position itself as a Sub-national prototype State, offering a conducive environment for private sector innovation. The government welcomes collaborations with the private sector to pilot and scale innovative solutions before national rollout, thereby cementing its status as a trailblazer in the digital economy landscape.
This momentous decision underscores Niger State’s commitment to harnessing the transformative power of technology to drive inclusive growth, foster entrepreneurship, and empower its citizens. By embracing forward-thinking policies and fostering collaborative partnerships, the state is poised to unlock new opportunities and propel itself towards a prosperous future.
