Niger State Police Commissioner, Alh Adamu Usman, has attributed bad terrain and ineffective communication network as factors hindering effective policing which also lead to the increasing attacks on the communities in Shiroro and Rafi Local government areas of the state by armed bandits.
The commissioner stated that the command had been facing difficulties in confronting the armed bandits as a result of bad roads within the affected communities in the two local government areas that were being subjected to series of attacks by the bandits.
Speaking exclusively to Newsline in his office Thursday, Alh Adamu Usman explained that worried by the spate of the incessant attacks by the armed men, the Inspector General of Police IGP Mohammed Adamu had deployed 3 units of Mobile Police Force from Kano and Jos to the affected communities.
The commissioner said that even with the deployment of the Mobile Police, they still experience some challenges due to bad terrain as most of the roads leading to those communities were not motorable.
He further disclosed that most of the bandits came through the bush path along the bordering states of Kaduna and Zamfara to carry out their operation and escape through the same routes back into the bush, adding that the armed bandits were more familiar with the terrain more than the security agencies.
He explained that apart from the bad state of the roads, it usually takes the police about six hours drive to reach some of the villages that are proned to attacks, stressing that before the arrival of his men to the communities the bandits have already carried out their attacks and escaped.
Adamu Usman further disclosed that the combined men of the mobile police and conventional police and men of the community vigilante group were already placed in some strategic areas within the community to assist in safeguarding the villagers.
He explained that the villages were not in the same location as most of them are farmers scattered in different localities which according to him makes them prone to attacks by the bandits.
He said the affected villages include kurebe, Kuki, Gurmana, and Allawa all in Shiroro Local Goverment Area, while Kusherki, Pandogari and Maikujeri in Rafi Local Government Area of the state shares borders with Kaduna and some parts of Zamfara State.
The State Commissioner of Police assured that with the support of the Inspector General of Police that deployed the team of Mobile Police men to the affected communities, the activities of the criminals will soon be curtailed to the barest level.
