SHORT HISTORY OF KAGARA

Kagara was founded as an organized settlement around the year 1852 which was used by Hausa traders travelling from the North to the Southern part of Nigeria as a resting place. The then Chief of Tegina deployed his Madaki, Masoyi, to oversee the area. 

Before colonial rule, each of the major ethnic groups that was comprised of Kagara Emirate Kingdom was independent of one another. Traditionally, each group had its own Chief (Sarki) as it was then called. The ethnic groups consist of Kamuku, Ungwai, Pangu, Bauchi, Bassa and Ura.

With the advent of the colonial administration, around 1900 to 1914. Kagara comprised of Tegina, Kusherki, Kwamgoma, Gunna, Birningwari, Kuriga, Kushaka and Allawa with Kagara being the Administrative Headquarters. 

From 1914 on wards, the Northern regional government under colonial administration introduced a lot of administrative changes in the north to which the status of Kagara also changed. This continued to the advent of the North Western government. 

In 1970, the then North Western State Government. introduced major changes in the chieftaincy system The stool of a paramount traditional ruler was put in place, with the seat at Kagara. The status of the chiefs of Tegina, Kusherki, Kwangoma and Gunna were changed to District Heads, while all the subordinate areas of Kamuku, Uregi and Ungwai were changed to village heads, only the chiefs of Tegina, Kursherki, Kwangoma and Gunna were eligible to contest tot the throne to become chief of Kagara. The then Chief of Gunna, late Alhaji Ahmadu Attahiru became the successful winner of the contest. Thus, in March 1971 the formal presentation of the staff of office of third class status was performed by the then Military Governor of North Western State, Alhaji Usman Faruq. Kagara chiefdom was upgraded to second class status in 1981 during the reign of Alhaji Ahmadu Attahiru, who died in November, 1981 before the formal presentation of the staff of office. Alhaji Sallihu Tanko who was then the District head of Tegina succeeded late Alhaji Ahmadu Attahiru. He was appointed on 1st January 1982. On 19th June 1982, he was formally presented with staff of office of second class status by the Executive governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Awwal Ibrahim.

In December 1991, Kagara chiefdom was up-graded to a first class status while the number of the Districts were increased to seven. They are:- Tegina, Kusherki. Kwangoma, Gunna, Uregi, Katunga and Madaka District Areas. In the same vein, on 31st December, 1991 the then Military Governor of the State, Col, Lawal Gwadabe formally presented the first class staff of office to His Royal Highness, Alhaji Salihu Tanko

ABOUT AGAIE

CLIMATE

The gentle and favourable climate condition of the area coupled with its rich landscape made it possible for the people to settle. Kagara emirate experiences wet and dry seasons characteristics of a tropical climate. The varying season starts from April/May to October with heavy rainfall from July to September.

The mean annual rainfall varies between 1,300mm to 1,60mm. The cold and dry harmattan winds usher in the dry season between November and February, erich gradually become hot between Marc h and May.

OCCUPATION

The major occupations of the people are farming, mat weaving, pot making, cattle rearing and blacksmithing. The area is blessed with vast arable and fertile land, which is conducive for the growing of variety of agricultural products. Dry season farming activities are carried out through irrigation system. Although 90% of the population engage in farming, the rest engage in other vocations as white collar business arts and crafts.

RELIGION

The inhabitants of Kagara are predominantly Muslims. There are however few Christians who are mostly settlers.

EDUCATION

As a growing cosmopolitan town, Kagara the headquarters of the emirate has two post primary institutions. These are Government Science Secondary School. Kagara and Ahamadu Attahiru Day Secondary School, Kagara. The town also boasts of a number of primary schools in addition to nursery and primary schools built by private concerns. Quranic anc, Islamic schools are scattered all over the emirate.

COMMUNICATION

Kagara has now a modern post office in the emirate GSM services of almost all the providers now operate 

TRANSPORTATION

Kagara is lucky to be on the high way between Lagos Kaduna and indeed the far North. Because of this, transport to every part of the country is available in the town Kagara also serves as a middle transit point for heavy-duty transports plying the North and South of the country There are also taxis plying the town and other major towns in the State as well as Minna lh’ capital.

MEDICAL FACILITIES

Kagara has a general hospital equipped with modern facilities to alle\,iate the health proi lern of the people In adoition to this are private clinics and other loci government health centres such as dispensaries to take care of immediate health needs of the people.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The strategic location of Kagara on the Lagos Kaduna Kano high way and also being the headquarters of Raft government area has opened up the town to variety of economic activities. Even with this however, fertile land remains the town’s cherished asset but n‘.,,:stment opportunities are available. For example.
