FARMER GOVERNOR UMARU BAGO RECEIVES COMMITTEE REPORT ON THE RE-INTRODUCTION OF POLL TAX (JANGALI); TO IMPLEMENT THE RECOMMENDATIONS
Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago has received a report on the reintroduction of the poll tax system otherwise known as Jangali in the Hausa language.
The report was presented by the Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers and Estu Nupe, Alh. Yahaya Abubakar who also chaired the committee.
Farmer Governor Umaru Bago described the report as timely considering the desire of the State Government to urgently resolve the farmer-herder crisis and banditry activities in the State.
He commended the Committee for a thorough job done and assured that the report would be perused with a view to implementing most of the recommendations.
Farmer Governor Bago also acknowledged the fatherly role and good stewardship of the Etsu Nupe, promising that his administration will not relent in strengthening the Traditional Institution.
Chairman of the Committee and Etsu Nupe Alh. Yahaya Abubakar while presenting the report, explained that the Committee on the Reintroduction of Poll Tax (Jangali) was set up by the last administration in 2021.
He said the Committee observed that since the poll tax system was abandoned, the state government has been experiencing security breaches and has lost a huge source of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
The Committee Chairman said remodelling of the poll tax system among other recommendations would help in checkmating the activities of the people, curtail insecurity and also boost the IGR of the State.
He then called on the people to see the payment of poll tax as a contribution to nation-building while the Government, on the other hand, provides the needed social services for them.
